How to Sew Draperies

If you are interested in sewing your own draperies, then you do not have to know everything about sewing. You can follow these simple steps to create curtains or drapes out of just about any fabric. The rule in sewing is similar to the mantra many carpenters use: "Measure twice; cut once." Following this rule allows you to create unique and stylish draperies without making errors.
First: Measure your windows
In order to determine how much fabric you need to purchase, you need to measure your windows. When you are measuring, remember to measure from the inside of each sill to the other. Add six inches to this measurement to allow for overhang on either side of your windows. Measure from the floor to the top of the inside sill, and add at least 10 inches to your measurement; this allows for the creation of a hem and a hole for the curtain rod.
Second: Sew the seam for the curtain rod
Fold over two inches of fabric at the top, and sew it horizontally. Make sure you keep your lines straight, or the curtain cannot hang evenly. It is worth the time and effort to take this step slowly. If you accidentally veer off course on the bottom hem, it is not nearly as noticeable as at the top.
Third: Sew the bottom seam
Similar to the way you sewed the slot for the curtain rod, fold over the bottom two inches of fabric. Remember to fold it in the same direction you did at the top. Then, sew straight across horizontally. You can add magnets or other weights inside this hem to ensure your new drapes hang evenly.
