How to Make Fabric Flowers

Fabric flowers are a great way to use left over material from other projects to create accessories. The fabric left over from sewing a little girls dress, for example, is easily turned into a matching hair accessory. Fabric flowers are durable, beautiful and relatively easy to create.
First: Prepare the fabric
Cut fabric into six 3-inch squares. Each square represents one petal of the final flower. Use a the same fabric, a different fabric for each petal, or use an even number of multiple kinds like three squares each of two different fabrics. Trim the corners off of each square to form circles. This is easiest to perform by using the lid to a margarine container or some other round object as a stencil.
Second: Cut the petals
Lay a flower pattern the shape desired on top of each fabric square and trace around it. The flower design should have no less than four and no more than about six petals. Cut the flower design from each of the six squares of fabric.
Third: Arrange the layers
Stack each of the flower cut outs, one on top of the other, so that the petals are stacked opposite one another and peak out through the space between the petals of the previous flower.
Fourth: Stitch and finish
When all the flower pieces are stacked and arranged, stitch through the center of all the flower pieces to tack them in position, so that they cannot move. Glue a jewel, or stitch a button into the center of the flower as a finishing touch.
